However, this convenience comes at a price: leaving the yacht in the water requires much more precise protection of onboard systems than a dry dock. The salty environment, high humidity, and constant risk of galvanic corrosion mean that neglecting installations in the fall leads to thousands of dollars in losses come spring — and, for charter owners, the most painful part is the downtime during the first, most profitable weeks of the season.

The DC installation is the heart of the yacht, and damage during winter generates the highest costs at the beginning of the season.
Lead-acid / AGM / GEL batteries: charge them to 100% before disconnecting the main switches. Discharged batteries freeze and sustain permanent damage at significant temperature drops.
Lithium batteries (LiFePO4): do not leave them fully charged. Before a long layup, bring the state of charge (SoC) to 50–60%.
Disconnect loads: turn off the main breakers. However, remember that automatic bilge pump systems and flood sensors must remain powered directly from the batteries.
Calibration and diagnostics of Victron Energy / BMS: professional configuration of chargers and MPPT controllers prevents overcharging or deep discharging.
Audit of passive draws: an experienced service will detect stray currents and hidden loads that can drain the battery bank within a few weeks of layup.
Leaving the yacht connected to shore power all winter carries a serious risk of accelerated electrolysis corrosion of the hull, shafts, and sea valves.
Check the physical condition of the power cable and plugs. Signs of melted plastic casing or corrosion on the contacts indicate a dangerous increase in resistance and fire risk.
Test of galvanic isolator / isolation transformer: malfunctioning galvanic protection makes your yacht an "anode" for neighboring vessels in the marina. The service will measure the continuity of protections and current leakage or galvanic protection using specialized tools.
RCD test (residual current device): verifying the functionality of RCD breakers under increased marine humidity conditions is a basic fire safety requirement.
A yacht generator that stands unused in a humid engine room for several months is at risk of pump component seizing or corrosion of the fuel system and generator.
Check the oil level and coolant in the closed engine circuit.
After completing maintenance work, ensure that the sea water valve is closed and marked.
Protection of the seawater system: flushing the cooling circuit with an anti-corrosion solution and antifreeze or simply fresh water protects the heat exchanger and engine block from salt deposits.
Impeller and generator service: checking the condition of the rubber impeller of the seawater pump and diagnosing the condition of the generator windings for moisture penetration.
Marine hydraulic systems are extremely susceptible to biological fouling (algae, crustaceans) and the growth of bacteria during long periods of inactivity.
Clean the seawater mesh filters (strainers) at the inlet to the air conditioning and desalination systems.
Maintenance of desalination membranes (Pickling / Biocide): leaving salty water inside the desalination membrane over winter will lead to its complete biological destruction. The service performs protective chemical flushing, ensuring system efficiency in the spring.
Protection of the air conditioning cooling loop: flushing the system with dedicated cleaning and anti-algae chemicals prevents the formation of salt and biological clogs in the heat exchangers.
Water left in the pressurized system is rarely a frost problem in the Mediterranean, but almost always a problem of stagnant water: limescale, sediment, and the growing bacterial flora in the warm hull, which spoils the taste of the water and shortens the lifespan of the pumps even before the first spring voyage.
Empty the fresh water tanks, turn on all taps at the lowest points of the installation, and drain the boiler.
Blowing out the system with compressed air: removes water from sections of the installation that cannot be drained by gravity alone, reducing the risk of pipe bursts during sudden temperature drops.
Protection of pressure pumps and gray and black water systems: prevents the buildup of limescale and the growth of bacterial flora in the pumps, which most often fail at the first spring start.
Can I leave the yacht connected to shore power all winter?
Only if there is a functioning galvanic isolator or isolation transformer and a working RCD. Without this protection, continuous connection to shore power for several months accelerates galvanic corrosion of the hull, prop shaft, and seacocks — this is one of the most expensive repairs I see in the spring.
Do AGM and LiFePO4 batteries winter the same way?
No. AGM/GEL batteries winter best when charged to 100%, as a discharged lead-acid battery freezes and suffers permanent damage. LiFePO4 requires the opposite approach — a state of charge around 50-60% and, if possible, disconnecting the BMS from deep discharge during the downtime.
Do air conditioning and desalination units require service while the yacht is in the water and not on land?
Yes, regardless of where the yacht is located. The threat is not frost, but stagnant salty water in the desalination membrane and in the air conditioning cooling loop — this is an ideal environment for biological growth, which destroys the membrane and clogs heat exchangers within a few months of inactivity.
How often should a yacht wintering in the water be checked without the owner's constant presence?
I recommend regular inspections on a cycle that allows for catching a bilge pump failure, a drop in voltage in the battery banks, or a leak in the seacock before it turns into serious damage — I determine the frequency individually based on the age of the installation and the mooring method. Usually, it is a weekly check-up visit, concluded with a protocol of component inspection.
Is it worth using the winter downtime for upgrades and not just maintenance?Definitely yes — this is the best time of year for work that would mean charter downtime during the season: installation or expansion of systems, switching to lithium batteries, servicing or replacing the generator, upgrading the electrical installation for the yacht's energy independence.
The most costly yacht launches after winter are those where the diagnostics of the electrical and marine hydraulic systems were ignored before the downtime. An early technical inspection — done in the fall, not in a panic just before the first voyage — helps avoid failures in the first, most critical time of the new charter season or private voyage.
